On the beautiful and sunny morning of October 11, 2008, members of Knox Ricksen along with friends and family sailed from Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco on The Lovely Martha to enjoy the annual Fleet Week Air Show, featuring the United States Navy's Blue Angels.

The Lovely Martha sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge, around Alcatraz Island, and back to a prime location on the bay to enjoy the exciting air show.

Since 1981, San Francisco Fleet Week has been an annual opportunity for Northern Californians to honor the men and women serving in the United States Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps.  Knox Ricksen is proud to support and honor our armed forces.

Knox Ricksen Helps Build a "Green" House for Habitat For Humanity

On June 28, 2008, Knox Ricksen worked with friends and family to help build homes for low-income families in Alameda through Habitat for Humanity East Bay.

Knox Ricksen strongly believes that it is important to support the local community, not only through financial contributions, but also through the dedication of time and resources to worthy causes.  Habitat for Humanity East Bay provides the perfect setting for hands-on involvement in the construction of homes.  The Knox Ricksen team worked hard, installing flooring, prepping for painting, painting and getting units prepared for move-in.  It was an extremely rewarding experience for all.

The Buena Vista Commons project in Alameda expects to exceed the level of sustainable, green features of East Bay Habitat for Humanity’s other recent projects.  The “green construction” goes beyond using energy consumption materials such as solar panels and reduces waste by using recycled materials and environmentally sustainable products.  The Alameda “green” homes incorporate a variety of green features, including “24 inch on center” framing (which reduces lumber usage by 30%), fast growing engineered lumber, 30% fly-ash concrete to reduce landfill, energy efficient fixtures and appliances on each home, and green landscaping with drought tolerant plants.

In 2008, Habitat for Humanity East Bay celebrates its 20th anniversary and the completion of its 200th home.  Knox Ricksen is proud to have been a small part of this significant achievement.

Knox Ricksen is Santa Claus to Stonehurst Child Development Center

Habitat for Humanity Photo

In December 2007 a class of approximately 20 children at Stonehurst Child Development Center wrote and decorated wish lists to Santa Claus.  The wishes of the children were humble and simple while the joy and excitement experienced by us through shopping, wrapping, and delivering the children’s wishes to their classroom was overwhelming.

Not only did Knox Ricksen wholeheartedly enjoy playing Santa Claus and making the holiday season a bit brighter for these families, but we were also filled with a profound sense of gratitude and appreciation for our own families and community.

Stonehurst Child Development Center is a non-profit educational child care center composed of underprivileged community students.  Stonehurst will begin a forced restructuring under the federal No Child Left Behind Act but Knox Ricksen is confident and looks forward to seeing the children at Stonehurst overcome and succeed at the challenges presented to them.

Knox Ricksen Team Members Help Build a House for Habitat For Humanity

On June 9, 2007, the team members of Knox Ricksen joined new homeowners and Habitat for Humanity in helping to build homes for low income families in Oakland.

From hanging flashing to erecting frames to using power saws, Knox Ricksen attorneys, staff, clients, friends and family labored, sweat, laughed and became covered in dust while working alongside grateful and happy new homeowners. We arrived with a sense of teamwork and left with a greater appreciation for the community in which we live and work.

Habitat for Humanity East Bay was formed in 1988 as an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Their mission is to create successful homeownership opportunities for families with limited incomes by building sustainable housing and revitalizing neighborhoods. To date, Habitat for Humanity East Bay has completed the construction of 180 single-family homes in Alameda County and Contra Costa counties, and funded the construction of over 400 additional habitat homes in countries overseas.

This was the first of many construction days for Knox Ricksen and we look forward to working more with clients, friends and families.
