Knox Ricksen Speaks To Owners About Disability Discrimination in Renting Properties
In November 2007 the attorneys of Knox Ricksen spoke to the Rental Housing Association of Northern Alameda County, a community outlet for local rental property owners, about a recent influx of lawsuits stemming from persons with disabilities claiming discrimination by landlords when looking and applying for apartments. The firm’s own experience and knowledge of handling the defense of numerous such claims for discrimination helped property owners understand the legal and financial implications of what one may consider a concerned approach to the appeal of their properties to a disabled person.
It is improper for any property owner to discriminate against any potential tenant based on any disability which includes visual, audio and physical disabilities. By explaining explicit legal authority, reviewing examples of improper yet well intentioned suggestions, and outlining a means for landlords to ensure against unintentional discrimination, Knox Ricksen helped prevent unwary landlords from becoming the target of a lawsuit which could bring mandatory statutory fees as well as costly legal fees.
